What a notary public does
A notary public serves as an impartial witness. The notary confirms the identity of each signer, confirms that the signing is voluntary, administers oaths and affirmations where a document calls for one, and completes the notarial certificate.
What a notary public does not do
Tawana Harris does not draft legal documents, choose which document you need, explain what a document means or what effect it will have, or advise you about your legal rights, obligations or options.
A notary also does not verify that the statements inside a document are true, that the document will be accepted by a court or agency, or that signing it is in your interest.
When a notarization cannot proceed
A notarial act will not be performed where a signer cannot be properly identified, does not appear to understand that they are signing, appears to be under pressure, or where the document lacks the notarial wording the act requires. Declining in those situations protects you and the document.
