Check with the facility first. Many have their own rules about visitors, visiting windows, and whether staff must be involved in a signing. Knowing this in advance prevents a wasted trip for everyone.

It also helps to know the room or unit, the best time of day for the patient, and whether the document requires witnesses who can attend.

What has to be true at the bedside

The signer must be able to be identified, must appear to understand that they are signing, and must be signing willingly and by their own decision. Being unwell does not prevent notarization — being unable to knowingly and freely sign does.

If the signer is sedated, not alert, or clearly being pressured by someone present, the notarization cannot proceed. A visit may be rescheduled for a better moment, which protects the patient and the validity of the document.
